PATREON:

THE RECIPE:

House Paint-base aka puddle for the substrate: PPG MultiPro in Satin from Home Depot, or Color To Go Extra White in Satin from any Sherwin Williams store. For this painting I used Glidden Essentials in Semi-Gloss White from Home Depot.

Pouring Medium aka PM Recipe: mix with all colors EXCEPT the cell activator color:

You’ll need: Behr 8300 Untinted Deep Base Paint (Home Depot); Infinity Semi-Gloss Base C Untinted (Lowe’s) and JoSonja Gloss Varnish OR Minwax Polyacrylic Gloss. I use a quart measuring cup (HD + get a lid). Mix up 12 oz. of the Behr 8300; 6 oz. of the Infinity, and 4 oz of varnish or the water-based polyacrylic to make 22 ounces of pouring medium. Stir well. NOTE: If your Behr is thin, you may not need the varnish so add a little at a time to get your desired consistency. This recipe is a guideline depending on the viscosity of the untinted house paint.

Use the colors and brands of your choice! These tutorials are meant to educate and inspire! Here’s how to mix:

Pigments: For a 3 oz cup I add 1/2 teaspoon of pigment powder to the cup, then add enough gloss varnish (any brand; I use JoSonja gloss varnish) to cover the powder. Mix well until all pigment is thoroughly wet; then add the pouring medium; mix well. Recommend a Covid mask to mix.

For any brand fluid or high flow acrylics: I put 2 1/2 ounces of the pouring medium into a 3 ounce cup, then squirt in color until I reach my desired shade. Mix well.

For tube paint (medium or heavy body paint), I added an 1/2 ounce of paint (1/2 teaspoon) to a 3 ounce cup, then added 2 ounces of pouring medium. If still thick I add a squirt of Golden’s High Flow Medium (thins and extends acrylic colors) OR water, and stir well.

Cell Activator/Color: Australian Floetrol + Amsterdam Lamp Black, 2.5 -1 ratio Australian Floetrol to paint.

  1. Karen not to take away from this gorgeous piece I was watching where I believe it was a challenge you had to do four pieces you chose to do for I believe they were six by sixes and you put them all together and blew them out I want that entire video and I can't find it for nothing. Anyway you you could give me the video number or how I could get to it? Please and thank you in advance❤❤❤

  2. Lloks ike rocks under water with a super smooth lake of water

  3. Colors are stunning Karen! I understand what you are saying about the top but overall it is still lovely. One day I hope to take a lesson in person with you! A road trip could be in my future!!

  4. Hi Karen, have you changed your untinted house paint yet ? Since the 8300 was discontinued?

  5. I love it. Why were you concerned about the lines? I don't do this art, so I'm not sure. I think it looks amazing!

  6. I have a couple of questions. but, first: my gosh, not a fail. Gorgeous!
I'm curious why some of your videos are numbered and others, not (are the non-numbered ones the ones you consider subpar?). The 2nd question: one of the C.A.s is listed as AMS' Permanent Violet Dark + some Lamp Black. Is AMS Expert Perm. Violet Opaque on Jerry's site, the one you are using in this video? Thank you, Susan H.

  7. This is beautiful, not a fail to me. I'm going to try this. I learned a lot about pouring more puddles when I don't like the results. I fail to do that, but that really saved this. Love everything you do❤

  8. Wow, that is so beautiful, you are such an inspiration, love all your work.

  9. So much beauty and I agree with you on the top. I like the boulder style cells more than you, though. Truly appreciate you walking us through your “save” thought process.

  13. I could see a woman’s figure in the right hand side. Beautiful!

  14. Sigh . . . I think it’s fantastic. But if it doesn’t make YOU (the artist) happy, then don’t keep it 😢😢😢😢😢

  15. But the orange down and call it Underwater Dream.

  16. I❤❤😊 Love this picture I always say picture instead of painting. I love this painting. It truly looks like a water scene and sunshine. Well not sunshine a stormy stormy sky it’s beautiful. But I understand how it’s not up to your standards, but I think it’s gorgeous. you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself, there is some things that you just can’t control like your skylight and I was able to see enough of the painting and I think it was beautiful so have a good day, my friend.

  17. I like it. I'm more than like it it is stunning. And you always have great outcome. 😮😮❤❤

  18. Outstanding Karen!! Wow, the colors are spectacular. Only you can pull this off 🥰 and this is gorgeous ‼️ Thank you 🤗

  19. Karen, the piece is definitely not a fail. It’s absolutely beautiful. To me it looks like it’s reflecting itself off the water in a magical way. Honestly, if I were in the position to purchase that painting I would buy it in a heartbeat. For some reason this piece just speaks to my soul.

  20. It looks like a landscape with water filled with water Lillie’s in the foreground! Unique!

  21. Was so good on the first… Then you loose all good cels.. but is ok

  22. Your use of color is awesome! Before you call a piece a "fail" … leave room for us to see it from our own perspective – before you you called it a coral reef, I was seeing a sunset in the desert and I thought it was incredibly beautiful.

  23. Karen, you are by far my favorite pour paint artist❤ I am so excited to see you doing deconstructed blooms again. I don’t think this was a fail completely. I see your point but I think you can fix it. I actually love how you do fix it. Where as some of them they pour it and they don’t like it and they don’t do anything about it. You do. I love that about you.❤ I hope you do some more deconstructed blooms. I really miss watching you do that.❤❤❤ sending you love don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re a great artist.❤

  24. I don't know what you are talking about… That's so gorgeous!

  25. That is gorgeous!!! The colours are amazing and I love everything about it, even your so called hot mess. Sky is never perfect and you nailed it in my opinion!! ❤❤❤

  26. I can’t imagine it a failure I wish I could fail like that! Absolutely stunning!
